The picture is becoming clearer but is not fully resolved.

Summary of PMETB document on Workplace-based Assessment

The main part of Workplace-Based Assessment will be an Enhanced Training Record (ETR) which will set out more clearly the competences a Registrar is to acquire.

This document will  be used throughout the three years. The learner will be responsible for completing a number of assessments demonstrating their competence and for assembling documentation to prove it. Many of the different methods of assessment used will be similar to assessments elsewhere, such as in the Foundation programme and in other specialities.

For example, it is likely that there will be:

bullet

case-based discussions

bullet

observation of consulting skills such as mini-CEX  or COT (consultation observation tool)

bullet

direct observation of procedures such as examination skills, resuscitation skills

bullet

multi-source (360º) feedback.

bullet

patient satisfaction questionnaire

The trainer will not do all the assessments but will be responsible for the final signing off of the trainer’s report.

Follow this link for a draft copy of the Enhanced Trainers Report

There may be some external moderation of these workplace-based assessments.

Six methods were piloted:

  1. Video,

  2. Criterion Audit

  3. Significant Event Analysis

  4. Multi-Source Feedback

  5. Patient Satisfaction questionnaire

  6. Referral Letter review
